How Long Does a Dental Crown Last?

Dental crowns.

Dental crowns are one of the most common and reliable restorative treatments in dentistry. They are designed to protect damaged teeth, restore strength, and improve the appearance of your smile. If you’re considering getting a crown—or already have one—you may be wondering how long it will last. While dental crowns are not permanent, they are very durable and can last many years with proper care.

Average Lifespan of a Dental Crown

On average, a dental crown lasts 10 to 15 years. However, many crowns can last 20 years or longer if they are well cared for. The exact lifespan depends on several factors, including the material used, your oral hygiene habits, and everyday wear and tear.

Different crown materials have slightly different durability levels. Porcelain crowns are popular because they closely match the natural color of teeth, making them ideal for front teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns offer both strength and aesthetics. Metal crowns, often made from gold or other alloys, are extremely durable and may last the longest, though they are less commonly used for visible teeth.

Factors That Affect How Long a Crown Lasts

Oral hygiene plays a major role. Even though the crown itself cannot decay, the tooth underneath it still can. Brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and keeping up with dental checkups help prevent decay around the crown.

Teeth grinding or clenching, also known as bruxism, can put extra pressure on crowns and cause them to wear down or crack sooner. If you grind your teeth, your dentist may recommend wearing a nightguard to protect both your crown and natural teeth.

Diet and habits also matter. Chewing ice, biting fingernails, or opening packages with your teeth can damage crowns. Limiting very hard or sticky foods can help extend their lifespan.

Signs a Crown May Need Replacement

Even with great care, crowns may eventually need to be replaced. Some signs that your crown may be wearing out include sensitivity around the tooth, visible cracks or chips, gum recession around the crown, or the crown becoming loose.

Your dentist can usually spot early signs of wear during routine dental exams. Regular checkups are important because they allow small problems to be addressed before they become bigger issues.

A dental crown is an investment in your oral health, and taking care of it is similar to caring for your natural teeth. Brush, floss, attend regular dental visits, and avoid habits that can damage your teeth. With proper care and regular dental maintenance, your dental crown can last well over a decade, helping you maintain a strong, healthy smile for years to come.
